A Shorten Labor Government will invest $940,000 towards upgrading sporting fields in Macarthur in a massive funding injection for sport in our region.

This election will be a choice between a Shorten Labor Government with a plan for the infrastructure our community needs, and more of the Liberals’ cuts and chaos.

Labor has committed $800,000 to deliver upgrades to the Eschol Park Sporting Complex, while an additional $140,000 will be provided to improve facilities at Sarah Redfern Oval in Minto.

“This funding will be used to deliver essential upgrades to our local grounds and will ensure that our local sporting clubs can continue to thrive into the future,” said Dr Mike Freelander.

“Eagle Vale-St Andrews Junior Rugby League Football Club will benefit greatly from the provision of a covered outdoor area for spectators and upgrades to the clubhouse at Eschol Park.  Labor will also support the growing female participation at the club, giving our female athletes the amenities that they deserve.

“At Sarah Redfern Oval, clubs like the Minto Soccer Club will benefit from funding towards upgrading the amenities block and fencing, as well as delivering lighting that will enable players to utilise the fields after dark. With Macarthur South West United FC to join the A-League in 2020, there’s never been a more exciting time for sport in south west Sydney.

“Our region is experiencing rapid population growth, and it is essential that our wonderful local sporting clubs and fields are supported so that they can continue to cater to our community’s needs. That is why Labor will facilitate these essential upgrades in government and continue to support our region’s future sporting stars.”

Shadow Minister for Sport, Senator Don Farrell, said Labor is committed to supporting clubs and communities to improve local sporting facilities to give all Australians a fair go at sport.

“Whether they dream of playing for Wests Tigers or just want to enjoy the benefits of being physically active, we want to give all Australians the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport,” said Senator Farrell.

“Our investments in local community sporting clubs and facilities like these help them build capacity to meet the welcome growth in female participation in club sport and support more Australians to live active, healthy lifestyles.”

We can invest in a fair go for all Australians because Labor has made the tough budget decisions to make multinationals pay their fair share of tax, close tax loopholes used by the top end of town, and we won’t give the big banks a tax cut.
