Last week, Dr Mike Freelander MP hosted a morning tea for Macarthur’s Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) Local Sporting Champions grant recipients.

Sixteen local sports people were awarded the AIS grants for sports ranging between indoor cricket, muay thai, rugby league, swimming, triathlon, softball and volleyball.

Many grant recipients were offered funds to assist with funding for Youth World Championship Competitions and inter-state representative evets.

Whilst some past grant recipients were in attendance, it was encouraging to see that there are more aspiring sports people who are succeeding within the Macarthur region.

Dr Freelander congratulated recipients and thanked parents and caregivers in attendance for the sacrifices they continue to make to ensure our future sport stars may succeed.

Our region has a rich heritage of sport stars growing into national champions and heroes. Thanks to programs such as the AIS Sporting Champions grant, we can ensure our sporting excellence can continue into the future.

Quotes attributable to the Hon. Dr Mike Freelander MP:

“Congratulations to all recipients - you are all bright, capable and motivated young people.”

“Watch this space and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for these young faces of Macarthur in upcoming Olympic Games.”

“The success of grant recipients is no surprise to me – I have read and written to many of the grant recipients in the past. These successes are not in isolation – they can be attributed to sacrifices of parents and determination of the sports person.”
