MEDICINES SHORTAGE

MEDICINES SHORTAGE Main Image

17 December 2019

The EpiPen and the EpiPen Junior are single-use devices that save lives.

I have had countless patients over the years whose lives have been saved by these medications, when suffering from a severe allergic reaction.

Australia prides itself on its healthcare system.

Yet, in 2019, parents are finding out that the lives of their children are being placed at risk, owing to a shortfall in the supply of lifesaving drugs such as the EpiPen Junior.

Australians would rightfully be shocked to discover the many issues that exist in the supply chain for common drugs.

It is evident that we have a real problem with the manufacturing, importation and distribution of many lifesaving medications in Australia, including EpiPens, cardiac medications and antibiotics.

The Government refuses to address this crisis.

Australia’s Therapeutic Goods Administration has identified no less than 65 medications which are at a “critical” shortage level; many of these would be considered to be lifesaving or essential for many Australian families.

The Health Minister takes every opportunity to politicise the PBS by claiming credit for the listing of drugs, which have been recommended by the independent experts.

However, when it comes to addressing a shortage in the supply of many critical medications the Minister is completely silent.

Australian patients deserve better.
