The Member for Macarthur, Dr Mike Freelander MP, has today expressed dismay at a recent snub from the NSW Minister for Transport and Roads, Andrew Constance.

Dr Freelander had recently sought to meet with the Minister to discuss the region’s public transport needs in light of rapid population growth and development.

Instead, the Minister’s office responded by stating “NSW Government’s transport and road connectivity plans for Greater Western Sydney are publicly available in the Future Transport 2056 strategy and the Western Sydney Rail Needs Study.

“I am willing to work with anyone, regardless of party affiliation, to advocate for Macarthur residents,” said the Member for Macarthur.

“It is concerning that the Minister is more interested in worrying about partisan politics, than working together in the best interests of this rapidly growing region.”

Dr Freelander, who coincidently holds a position on the federal Liberal-National Government’s advisory board the Forum of Western Sydney Airport, said he was concerned that the Minister was turning a blind eye to the needs of South West Sydney.

“Every expert knows that it is critical that the new Western Sydney Airport is properly connected to Macarthur via a rail link – everyone but the Ministers responsible,” said the Member for Macarthur.

“Macarthur’s growing suburbs need adequate access to public transport.”

“It is imperative that the NSW and Federal Government make use of the freight and commuter rail corridor that is preserved to connect Macarthur to the airport, and service our growing communities.”

The Member for Macarthur has reiterated his invitation to work constructively with the Minister.

“He is welcome to come out and see first hand the development that has been occurring in our region. My door is always open to the Minister if decides he wants to engage with our community.”

“Merely stating that his Government has commissioned a study – a study which they are presently ignoring – is not sufficient,” said the Member for Macarthur.
