Today is a solemn day for the Commonwealth and for all Australians with the passing of Her Majesty the Queen.
For 70 years and 214 days, Queen Elizabeth the Second served with distinction, respect, and an unwavering ability to unite men, women, and children in times of uncertainty.
When Australia has experienced some of our darkest days, from bushfires, floods, droughts and other troubling events, Queen Elizabeth provided a guiding hand of assurance and consideration.
Over her many years of service, Her Majesty made 16 trips to our nation, with her first visit in 1954 drawing crowds of 7 million Australians: approximately 70% of our population at the time.
The Commonwealth has lost a Queen, and her family has lost a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.
I join the millions of Australians and individuals around the Commonwealth in mourning Her Majesty, and in wishing His Majesty, Charles III, a successful and peaceful reign.
